China
will implement safeguard tariffs on imported steel products
on November 20 before the expiration of the existing temporary
steel tariffs. On May 24, China imposed six-month-long special
tariffs ranging from 7% to 26% on nine steel products: medium
plates, steel sheets, silicon steel, stainless steel sheets,
wire rods, steel bars, steel sections, seamless steel tubes
and steel billets.
"As far as we know, the Mainland will extend tariffs
on five steel products to be imported under 27 tariff codes
from November 20 this year until May 23, 2003," a source
with Taiwan's Yieh Phui Enterprises said. The source, Mr.
Huang, is with Yieh Phui's sales department overseeing Yieh
Phui's sales in mainland China.
The five products are hot-rolled steel sheets, cold-rolled
sheets, color-coated sheets, non-oriented silicon steel sheets
and stainless cold-rolled sheets, Huang said. Import quotas
mainland China to impose on five steel products beginning
November 20
