Dismounting

Mounting and DismountingWhen dismounting bearings care must be taken not to damage the bearing or machinery. The force needs to be applied to the inner ring when removing the bearing from the shaft and to the outer ring when removing it from the housing. The applied force should be even. The most appropriate tool for removing a bearing is a hand press For small bearings, bearing pullers or hydraulic presses are used. When removing the bearing with a bearing puller, use a piece of soft metal to protect the shaft from being scratched. Large bearings that have been in use for long require larger dismounting force. In some designs, consideration has been given to overcome this dismounting difficulty by injecting oil between the mating surfaces. Special induction heaters may also be used to expand the inner rings

When dismounting smaller bearings with adapters, the inner ring is held by a stop fastened to the shaft and the nut is loosened several turns. Hammering on the sleeve follows this. When removing the bearing with a hammer, use a soft metal protector, to protect the shaft from being damaged.

Dismounted bearings should only be reused if it is not damaged and has not reached its fatigue life.
