Five teams of the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on Tuesday evening carried out raids in different parts of north Chennai and seized duplicate ball bearings worth over Rs. 5 lakh. One of the employees of a shop where the police went in allegedly suffered a heart attack and collapsed after seeing the police team. The employee, identified as Prabhu, a resident of Pulianthope, was working in a shop in Muthumari Amman Koil Street, Manadi. His co-workers rushed him to a private hospital nearby but the doctors there referred him to the Government Stanley Hospital. However, Prabhu died on the way to the hospital, sources added. Sources with the CCB said the raids were carried out in shops in Thambu Chetty Street, Linghi Chetty Street and in other locations in Parrys and Manadi following complaints by representatives of a leading bearing firm. Police teams seized close to 20,000 duplicate ball bearings, cardboard, packing materials and fake labels bearing logos of the firm. Ball bearing samples will be sent for forensic analysis to ascertain their authenticity before the police apprehend their manufactures and sellers.
