Team Bath's Formula Student racing car uses Barden's angular contact ball bearings

Barden is supplying angular contact ball bearings to Team Bath Racing for use on its 2014 Formula Student racing car. The car has a pair of these bearings fitted to each wheel. The bearings on the racing car are from Barden's FAG range of angular contact ball/spindle bearings. These are mounted back-to-back in pairs on each wheel. The bearings are manufactured to P4 accuracy, with P2 internals. For extra performance, the bearings use ceramic balls and are outer ring relieved, sealed and greased. Team Bath Racing is a team of around 100 undergraduate engineers from the University of Bath. Every year, the team designs, builds and competes with a single-seater racing car in the Formula Student competitions. The team will compete in three competitions later this year: Silverstone (12–13 July 2014); Germany (29 July–4 August 2014); and Austria (17–20 August 2014). The team has been using wheel bearings from Barden on the racing car since 2010. The wheels are a critical part of the racing car and the overall powertrain set up. The use of inferior bearings would lead to increased friction, overheating and slower speeds around the track. Key application benefits The Barden wheel bearings have proved to be very reliable. The wheels undergo high lateral forces, particularly when cornering, and so having superior wheel bearings ensures high reliability, lowest possible friction levels and a better overall performing car.
