Brunswick industrial sites target fall startup

The opening of operations at Brunswick County's newest industrial facilities are behind schedule, but both Lee Controls and The 33rd Strike Group plan to be running full steam by the fall. Lee Controls, which manufactures ball bearings and other motion components, will be fully operational in September, a full year since announcements were made of the New Jersey company's intent to open shop, according to Jim Bradshaw, Brunswick County Economic Development Commission director. Officials at Lee Controls declined to comment on the progress being made at the facility along N.C. 133 near Smithville Township Park. The company is expected to spend $2.46 million over the next three years at the Southport location. The 33rd Strike Group, a catamaran boat-building company, is also set to open shop in September. Paul Miller, director of sales, said converting the warehouse at an industrial park off Mount Misery Road has been a slow process. "There have been growing pains like any startup," he said. "Sure, we would have liked to be rocking and rolling in July, but we are right around there." The biggest difficulties have been converting the 55,000-square-foot warehouse into a factory. The facility has had numerous compliance issues because of an inadequate number of doors. Reworking electrical lines has also been an issue. "They've been ... relatively small issues," Miller said. So far, the company is employing about 12 people, and Miller expects the total to grow to 20 to 40. The boats the factory will produce will be a line of affordable 12- to 20-foot catamarans. "We see lots of growth potential," Miller said.
