Lark Hill turbine powers on

Wind power could soon reduce power bills for Rockingham sports clubs after an experimental wind turbine was connected to the grid at a city sports centre. The 5kW turbine, which was erected at Lark Hill Sportsplex two years ago as part of a City of Rockingham and Murdoch University experiment, got a new lease of life last week, thanks to a determined soccer mum. Steph Borton said she wondered why the turbine, at the north end of the centre's soccer training fields, was not working and decided to spring into action in October last year. She said Rockingham City Football club spent up to $1500 a month on flood lighting and she hoped the turbine might eventually reduce costs. She hoped the club might eventually purchase further turbines. "The club has looked into purchasing more turbines, but they cost up to about $15,000 each," Mrs Borton said. "It's always windy here and could be a great idea for all of the sports clubs at Lark Hill." Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the turbine had had some teething problems since it was formally connected to the grid on Monday last week. Cr Sammels said a self-tripping mechanism responded to various factors, including weather conditions. "The turbine is now generating power and feeding it back to the grid through a bi-directional meter and protection cubicle," he said. Opposition leader Mark McGowan said just like solar panels had become standard for many homes and businesses as a way of generating clean energy, he hoped wind turbines could become standard for many larger-scale operations.
