Marysville awards $11K contract for overhaul of pump at water plant

The city of Marysville will pay Northern Pump and Well $10,998 to repair the bearings and overhaul the motor on low service pump number 1 at the water filtration pump.
Northern, a Lansing-based company, was the lowest of four Michigan bidders on the project. The city council voted unanimously to award the bid to Northern at its regular meeting on April 13.
"This is an unforeseen item that came up a few weeks ago," said Bari Wrubel, supervisor of the water and wastewater plants. "We started to develop some noise in one of our low service pumps at the water plant. The low service pump is the one that delivers the water from the river to the plant to be treated. We had a few companies come in and take a look at it. They agreed that one or two of the lower shaft bearings have gone bad. With the amount of work it's going to take to get that pump out of there, I can't see taking it out and just doing a bearing repair. They have to bring in a 40-ton crane, take the skylight out, drop down through the skylight, remove the 100-horsepower motor from the top and set it aside. With all the labor that's going to be involved, it makes sense to overhaul the motor."
Dubric of Comstock Park submitted the second lowest bid at $12,584. Layne Christensen of Lansing quoted $13,000 for the job. Kennedy Industries of New Hudson was high at $20,850.
The pump had a shorter lifespan than expected by three to four years, said Wrubel.
"The pump has been in operation for seven years," Wrubel said. "It's used every day. It draws in water from the river that still has sand mixed in it, so these things are going to happen."

"How long will the pump be down?" asked Mayor Dan Damman.
"It's about a four week turn-around," said Wrubel. The plant has three other pumps that can fill the void while the overhaul takes place.
"Does it come with any type of a warranty?" asked Damman.
"One year," said Wrubel.
The city has not hired Northern for any previous work. But the city's engineering firm, Hubbell, Roth and Clark, has worked with the company.
"HRC has had repeated successful pump installation and repair projects with them," said Wrubel in his report to City Manager Randy Fernandez. "Financing will be provided by the equipment maintenance budget."

"Have we done business with any three of the other bidders?" asked council member Rita Hendricks.
"Two of them, yes," said Wrubel. "Kennedy Industries, we've done a ton of work with them. They were one of the main suppliers for the wastewater and water plant updates. Layne was the company that installed these pumps in 2007."
