New motor position sensing tech

The sensing technology also supports auto-calibration and linearisation features to ensure consistent performance throughout a motor’s operational life.RELIABILITY IN HARSH ENVIRONMENTSBased on the vernier principle, the dual-coil sensor technology supports a resolution of up to 19 bits and an accuracy of up to 14 bits. The robust sensor technology is capable of operating reliably in harsh environments where exposure to high temperatures, dust, moisture, vibration and electromagnetic interference (EMI) is common. Additionally, the induction sensors are immune to stray fields, require no maintenance, and are less susceptible to error than magnetic sensors. SUMITOMO‘S AC4125K TURNING GRADE

Many of these cast iron applications are featured in the automotive industry, among others. Gray cast iron is used for parts like engine blocks and brake discs where sliding is required, while ductile cast iron is used for parts such as differential cases and carrier cases where strength is required. Gray cast iron is an alloy primarily composed of carbon (C) and silicon (Si), with C content of 2.1% or more. Gray cast iron appears gray on the fracture surface because carbon is more present in the form of graphite than in the form of cementite. Ductile cast iron contains somewhat more carbon and silicon than gray iron, with the graphite becoming spherical due to the addition of magnesium and/or cerium. AC4125K is Sumitomo’s 1st recommended grade for interrupted machining of cast iron. Using Absotech Coating, the proprietary CVD coating technology, to provide excellent chipping resistance by maximizing compressive stress to achieve stable and longer tool life for roughing of components such as differential cases and carrier cases. Also, the gold color inserts make it easy to identify used corners, assisting in the improvement of tool management.

At Photonics West 2024, PI presents new solutions with air-bearing stages and a new entry-level system in addition to established systems.Silicon photonics is an increasingly mainstream field, central to applications as varied as hyperscale data center interconnects to wearable biosensors to quantum computing. Accompanying these emerging applications are significant challenges for manufacturing and especially scaling to meet escalating demand. And the biggest cost contributor is the exacting, often nanoscale alignment requirements for the mutual positioning of photonic elements such as optical integrated circuits, fiber optics and arrays, lenses, diffractive elements and more. Addressing this since 2016, PI's award-winning technology for high-throughput industrial alignment of photonic components (Fast Multi-channel Photonics Alignment, FMPA) and special high-precision mechanics enable the alignment of photonic components within fractions of a second.Sharp Rise in Demand ExpectedThe global demand for SiPh components continues to rise dramatically. Rounding up the latest product and technology developments in motors and drives.

As the demand for increased automation continues to rise across almost all industrial sectors, the enabling automation technology must evolve to keep pace with these changes, and motors and drives are no exception. From smaller and custom motor designs to improved drive networking and connectivity, new and unique applications require continual innovation and development from motor and drive system developers. Let’s take a look at some of the latest technological advances from the sector.

SAVING ENERGY AND MATERIAL

Pitching itself as a pioneer in saving CO2 and material, Nord Drivesystems has exceeded the highest European standards efficiency class (IE5) with its new IE5+ synchronous motor. Designed to be both compact and energy efficient, the motor offers a constant high efficiency up to 93% and higher over a wide torque range, offering optimal energy performance in partial load and partial speed ranges.

Not only saving energy but also emissions, the IE5+ motor reduces emissions by around 0.15t CO2 per year when compared with a conventional IE3 asynchronous motor, according to a model calculation. In large systems comprised of hundreds or thousands of drives, this adds up to an impressive total saving. In addition, the motor is also hailed for its material efficiency, having been designed as a 9-role synchronous motor in an IPM design. This reduces the size of the motor’s active components, which not only results in material savings in the sheet metal package but also in the magnet material. With 8-pole synchronous motors, the stator can also be manufactured with the so-called single-tooth windings. As a result, valuable material such as copper is only used where it is actually productive, and inefficient use in the winding head is reduced.

“We were glad that we were able to significantly reduce the use of this material,” says Jörg Niermann, Nord Drivesystem’s Head of Marketing. “Various innovations in the motor design help us to realise significant material savings with our new IE5+ series. Our IE5+ synchronous motor combines energy efficiency with material efficiency and thus scores twice in terms of sustainability.”

STRAIGHT OUT THE BOX

On the drive side, industrial and electronic products supplier RS has launched a range of six ebm-papst drive development kits to help engineers to prototype and test new motor drive designs quickly and easily. The kits are pitched as ready for use ‘straight out of the box’ by engineers who are looking to switch from other motor technologies to brushless DC (BLDC) motors with integrated controllers.

Each kit includes a switch box which replaces a PLC and enables the engineer to set digital or analogue inputs. These inputs dictate the unique parameters for how the motor will operate in a specific application and can control the speed and position. Supported by an intuitive and extensive programming and evaluation software interface suite, the kits include a programming module that can be used to set up operating parameters and drive characteristics, enabling them to get up and running quickly. Additionally, engineers can benefit from a range of video tutorials, quick-start guide and full programming manual including 3D models, datasheets and drawings. RS is also offering a range of nine ‘bolt on’ motors and gearboxes, each offering a different drive solution, which are designed specifically for use in conjunction with the kits.

MONORAIL MOBILITY MADE POSSIBLE

Motors and drives are often required to fulfil the needs of novel and unique applications, and this project involving KEB Automation is no exception. The automation specialist has supplied its servo motors and T6 APD and Combivert S6 drive controllers to the Monocab project – a driverless monorail cabin for up to eight people which will travel on a single rail. The uniqueness of this project – which is being undertaken by the OWL University of Applied sciences – is the goal of enabling two monocabs to travel at the same time in each direction, thanks to stability achieved by an innovative combination of actively-controlled gyroscopic systems with a moveable mass that balances the cab during travel.

“The control of the traction drives is handled by our modular inverter system, the T6 APD,” explains Daniel Schröder, Application Engineer for control technology at KEB. “The S6 inverters and the servo motors, on the other hand, are needed to support the stabilisation of the cabin.”

The T6 APD, a scalable and modular inverter system with integrated power electronics, was developed specifically for the automotive environment, Schröder adds: “Important in this application is a high protection class, vibration and shake resistance. As the vehicle is exposed to weather, durability and robustness play a major role, and the T6 fulfils exactly this.”

The system works by converting current from the HV-DC source into three-phase current for driving electric motors, and can be flexibly adapted to different requirements. The T6 APD enables the integration of up to six inverter modules, and supports all motor types such as synchronous and asynchronous motors.

Kollmorgen Expands AKD2G Servo Drive with New Synchronized Communication Protocols

Kollmorgen has announced the latest update to its AKD2G servo drive. With the introduction of these new features, Kollmorgen has broadened its offerings to additionally support PROFINET IRT and Ethernet/IP with CIP Sync alongside CANopen, EtherCAT, and FSoE time-synchronized communication protocols. Each protocol is rigorously tested with a variety of motion controllers and certified by industry standards organizations.

The AKD2G servo drive update allows for synchronized motion between multiple drives using a wide variety of control architectures. Forvia Hella Honored with John Deere Award for Sustainability

The leading manufacturer of agricultural machinery honors Forvia Hella for its heat recovery system at the Großpetersdorf site in Austria. The system saves around 175,000 kilowatt hours of natural gas per year and therefore around 32,000 kilograms of CO2. The award was presented at the John Deere European Supplier Conference in March 2024 in Mannheim, Germany."We are proud to have received this award from John Deere. We are continuously working to save energy and make our business more sustainable," says Christine Romirer-Maierhofer, responsible for Energy and Environment at Hella Fahrzeugteile Austria GmbH. With the global "Think.Act.Save." program, Forvia Hella is pushing for systematic energy savings in production. The company aims to achieve CO2-neutral production worldwide by 2025 at the latest (Scope 1 and 2, at least 80 percent absolute reduction compared to 2019 and compensation of the remaining direct emissions).With this in mind, a heat recovery system with compressors has been in use in Großpetersdorf since March 2023. A large proportion of the energy used to generate compressed air is converted into heat, which is transferred to the painting facility and used for space heating in winter. This allows 90 percent of the electrical energy used to be converted into usable heat. The heat recovery system has an amortization period of less than two years and helps to significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions at the site.

New black UV epoxies

Another major benefit from those Black&Light adhesives is room temperature shipping and storage. Conventional single-component, black-colored epoxy adhesives must be transported and stored cold or deep-frozen.The black color in a conventional UV adhesive absorbs a high percentage of the UV curing energy.  This means that the UV light energy required to fully polymerize an adhesive only penetrates a few micrometers. This phenomenon leads to the formation of a superficial “skin”, while the adhesive underneath remains uncured. The new black Vitralit BL UC adhesives from Panacol can be cured to greater than 1mm in thickness, purely with UV LED light. UV LED curing systems from Dr. Hönle are perfectly matched to the absorption wavelengths of the Black&Light technology, ensuring optimal curing of the black adhesives.Vitralit BL UC 1101, Vitralit BL UC 1102, and Vitralit BL UC 1103 are Panacol’s new Black&Light adhesives and they cover a wide range of applications. They are suitable for component encapsulation, glob top, or edge bonding in electronics production. They can also be used as optical adhesives in applications requiring high OD (optical density) values.Vitralit BL UC 1101 is the perfect choice if a thick layer of adhesive is needed.  It cures reliably in thick layers up to 1.3 mm, resulting in an optical density of up to 3.9. Siemens to Acquire Industrial Drive Technology Business of Ebm-Papst

NHVR delivers emergency notices in response to WA flooding

<img src="/ueditor/php/upload/image/20240321/1711022348518748.jpeg" title="1711022348518748.jpeg" alt="4.jpeg"/>The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has worked with Main Roads Western Australia and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport South Australia to publish two emergency notices after recent flooding forced the closure of a key rail network.NHVR COO, Paul Salvati, said the notices give consent to increased access for road trains up to 53.5 metres, between Port Augusta in South Australia and the WA border, and then internally into WA.“Over the past week, we have seen massive amounts of rain fall on the WA outback, inundating roads and damaging key networks, and our thoughts are with anyone who has been affected,” he said.“The flooding in the Eyre Highway area has caused damage to the rail network, forcing it closed.“In light of this, the NHVR has partnered with WA and SA state transport authorities to deliver this urgent emergency notice.”Salvati said the notice would provide heavy vehicle drivers and operators with increased flexibility and expedited access to critical freight routes, facilitating the efficient transport of essential supplies and emergency relief for communities cut off by flooding.“Truckies have had to take huge detours to reach their destination due to this flooding, and the NHVR recognises the importance of delivering essential items to the affected communities,” he said.“However, we are also urging drivers to exercise caution when travelling through these conditions, prioritising safety above all else.”Due to the heightened risk and uncertainty, the NHVR will be proactively patrolling the region to ensure all heavy vehicle drivers are travelling safely.“We anticipate more trucks on the road during this time, and with the road conditions unpredictable, the NHVR’s priority is safe, efficient heavy vehicle movements,” Salvati said.“The last thing we want to see is overloaded or unsafe truck operations, with compliance paramount during this time.”The NHVR is reminding drivers to make sure they are across the details in these emergency notices before travel.Salvati said drivers should continue to practise safety and drive to the conditions and follow any advice or instruction from local authorities.“For any driver navigating these challenging conditions, be prepared by taking any necessary precautions, equip yourself and your vehicle appropriately, and always prioritise safe driving practices to ensure a safe and secure journey,” he said.“Operators should carefully brief any drivers who are new to the route, including on the location of rest areas and fuel stops.”

Alaska/Yukon sign highway maintenance agreement

During Alaskan Governor Mike Dunleavy’s February visit to Yukon – his first official visit since becoming governor five years ago – a memorandum of understanding was signed between Dunleavy and Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai.“By working cooperatively with our neighbors in the Yukon, we can help ensure that people traveling to or from Alaska on the road are able to do more safely with fewer road hazards,” Governor Dunleavy stated to media during the visit.The result is the Alaska Highway Yukon Territory Permafrost Repairs Project (wisely referred to simply as ‘the Project’ in the MOU, side-stepping the unwieldy AHYTPRP acronym), which will see Alaska provide the funding for road repairs that will be carried out by Yukon on the stretch of highway on the Canadian side leading to the Alaskan border. The vast majority of cars that use that highway are Americans driving to and from Alaska.Since 1977, repairs and maintenance of the Alcan (Alaska-Canadian) Highway have been funded through a US-Canadian highway construction funding accord called the Shakwak Agreement. However, with road conditions on the highway deteriorating due to thawing permafrost and other impacts, a new agreement was required.‘The Project’ will be included in Alaska’s 2024-2027 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program, supported by Alaska’s apportionment funding. The funding will be made available on a reimbursement basis.“By working together and pursuing common goals, we aim to shape a future of shared opportunities for our region,” said Premier Pillai. “This visit signifies a key milestone in strengthening our relationship, fostering a collaborative path towards a more interconnected future for both Alaskans and Yukoners.”An Intergovernmental Relations Accord, aimed at information sharing and fostering further cooperation, was also signed.

Intralogistics is the backbone of every supply chain. Increasing demands for energy efficiency and sustainability as well as labor shortages and cybersecurity threats require efficient and adaptive material flow technology. IoT-enabled hardware and software from the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio cover the entire warehouse operation, including receiving, transport, storage, picking, packing, and shipping. By leveraging digitalization, automation, and innovative technologies like the digital twin, Siemens is improving the efficiency and sustainability of the intralogistics industry and paving the way for a smart, adaptable, and resilient future for logistics operations.

At the trade show booth, Siemens will be demonstrating a fully automated autonomous mobile robot (AMR) application that was realized using the Simove modular system and features comprehensive integration across all levels. With Simove, Siemens offers a system platform specifically designed for automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and AMRs. The platform includes modular software components and libraries for guidance control, navigation, and general automation and uses standardized automation and drive components. The Simove modular system for AGV and AMR applications enables the precise design of applications that meet individual requirements. A real AMR with a robot arm that performs gripping tasks will also be on display. A fully integrated Siwarex weighing system for Simatic ET 200SP will be used for fast process control and precise inventory recording.

Another highlight is the autonomous load-carrier handling technology. The AI-based software system enables AGVs and AMRs to visually detect, autonomously approach, and automatically pick up load carriers in variable and dynamic environments. Autonomous load-carrier handling solutions are used for applications like forklift trucks, and their flexible use can significantly reduce costs, engineering, and time expenditures. In the area of safety, Siemens will be presenting the Safevelo software prototype for AMRs. It allows the fail-safe monitoring of a vehicle’s speed, which enables the protective fields of safety laser scanners to be switched dynamically. Safevelo is kinematics-independent and doesn’t require any additional safety or incremental encoders to determine an AMR’s direction of movement. This saves valuable installation space, simplifies the system architecture and engineering, and reduces cabling costs.

To enable robot systems to reliably pick and pack any item, they must be able to interact with their environment and adapt to changing situations in the process. Simatic Robot Pick AI is a pre-trained AI vision software that enables robots to reliablly grip previously unknown articles – also called model-free gripping – in demanding pick-by-robot applications for a wide range of objects. Pre-training of the robot by the user is no longer necessary. The pre-trained deep learning algorithm processes a new 3D camera image in milliseconds and determines robust 3D poses for collision-free removal of the object, regardless of their shape and size. Siemens will be showcasing two new features at Logimat. The first is the beta version of Simatic Robot Pick Pro. The solution supports the oriented gripping of any object with the aid of multi-suction grippers, which means that large, heavy, and complex objects can be handled in applications like bin picking, depalletizing, and sorter induction. The second is the Simatic Robot Pack AI capability, which determines suitable placement poses for any unknown objects on the robot arm. This ensures that the volume in a target container like a shipping box is optimally utilized.

As thin-film technology, perovskites provide a lighter-weight solar cell option that can be produced at a lower cost and deposited on a flexible base. This means new design and application opportunities for the way solar power is collected, and the potential for faster, more widespread expansion of the world’s capacity to generate solar energy.While major advances have been achieved with rapidly rising power conversion efficiencies and scalable fabrication approaches, the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells when exposed to environmental stimuli has remained an obstacle to commercialisation.Perovskite solar cells are built with layers of materials, either printed or coated from liquid inks, spin-coated, or vacuum-deposited. When exposed to heat and sunlight, the volatile organic components within the perovskite layer have a tendency to escape or migrate. This leads to degradation which significantly reduces their efficiency, stability and performance. While several strategies have been employed in the past to address this instability, none have been successful in providing perovskite solar cells with ongoing protection from environmental exposure.Taking a novel approach to solving this stability challenge, researchers at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, used a molecular bis-diazirine crosslinker – a product called BondLynx, designed and manufactured by specialty chem-tech company XlynX Materials – to covalently bond the organic cations within the perovskite layer. The results were extraordinary.ILLUMINATION STABILITYBondLynx-treated perovskite solar cells showed remarkable stability, retaining nearly 99% of their initial efficiency even after 1,000 hours of continuous 1-sun illumination (1kW/m2). In comparison, untreated control perovskites exhibited a 35% loss in power conversion efficiency after just 200 hours of operation under the same conditions.THERMAL STABILITYWhen exposed to constant heat (60°C), untreated perovskite solar cells demonstrated poor thermal stability, losing 27% efficiency after 600 hours of continuous operation. By comparison, BondLynx-treated perovskite solar cells maintained nearly 98% efficiency under these conditions.HIGH EFFICIENCYOverall, BondLynx-treated perovskite solar cells achieved a high certified efficiency of over 24% with operational stability over 1,000 hours. With no significant reduction in performance over the course of the study, the stability improvements realised by BondLynx are expected to extend far beyond the 1,000-hour mark.LIMITING LOSSESThe reason BondLynx is effective is because it forms covalent chemical bonds with the organic components in perovskites to strongly immobilise them, thereby limiting losses in efficiency, stability, and performance. BondLynx employs diazirine-based crosslinking technology which, when exposed to heat or UV light, produces highly reactive carbenes which crosslink with virtually any nearby aliphatic organic molecules containing C-H, O-H, or N-H bonds.This diazirine-based approach has long been utilised in the field of chemical biology, and is being successfully applied by XlynX Materials to overcome adhesion challenges associated with low surface energy plastics, to add strength to performance textiles, and increasingly to stabilise organic components in semiconductors.XlynX Materials is now actively working with solar cell manufacturers to conduct longer performance trials of its products and to help facilitate the incorporation of BondLynx into the perovskite fabrication process. If successful, this improved cell stability could prove to be a tipping point for the commercial viability of perovskite solar products. More broadly, these findings suggest a wide range of potential applications for diazirine technology in the field of organic electronics, something the team at XlynX Materials is eager to explore.

Automated alignment systems

At Photonics West 2024, PI presents new solutions with air-bearing stages and a new entry-level system in addition to established systems.Silicon photonics is an increasingly mainstream field, central to applications as varied as hyperscale data center interconnects to wearable biosensors to quantum computing. Accompanying these emerging applications are significant challenges for manufacturing and especially scaling to meet escalating demand. And the biggest cost contributor is the exacting, often nanoscale alignment requirements for the mutual positioning of photonic elements such as optical integrated circuits, fiber optics and arrays, lenses, diffractive elements and more. Addressing this since 2016, PI's award-winning technology for high-throughput industrial alignment of photonic components (Fast Multi-channel Photonics Alignment, FMPA) and special high-precision mechanics enable the alignment of photonic components within fractions of a second.Sharp Rise in Demand ExpectedThe global demand for SiPh components continues to rise dramatically. Leading market research companies unanimously predict that by 2030 the market for SiPh components will quadruple to around ten billion US dollars. Productivity, throughput, and manufacturing costs are therefore increasingly at the focus of interest. The precise alignment of photonic elements and structures on chips plays a major role here. This task is carried out several times in quality control during production as well as during assembly and packaging with optical fibers.Both at wafer level and after separation, the functionality of the photonic structures and elements must be checked repeatedly, in order to remove defective chips from production as early as possible. In the final assembly and packaging of SiPh chips with optical fibers for connection to the outside world, the alignment with submicrometer precision is also a decisive process step.Depending on the complexity of the end products, alignment must be repeated up to two dozen times in the production process. In SiPh production, the time required for this is therefore crucial in terms of both costs and productivity.Comprehensive Solution PortfolioFor these tasks, PI presents its newly expanded spectrum of automatic alignment systems at Photonics West 2024 and on a dedicated webpage. The systems are driven by advanced intelligent controllers that integrate the FMPA suite of functionalities. These enable alignment within fractions of a second, typically a hundred-fold improvement over all previous approaches. The proven solutions, consisting of a hybrid combination of hexapods and piezo-based nanopositioners, are now supplemented by an alignment system with ultra-clean, high-dynamic compact air-bearing linear stages.  Another new system solution also provides cost-effective functionality with long travels for less demanding applications. With its deep toolkit of motion technologies, PI offers suitable solutions for every possible requirement.For the testing of SiPh components on large-area substrates such as PCBs, trays, or special carriers, PI provides modular, scalable gantry systems that can now also implement the advance FMPA technologies. The introduction of the 30 Series fills a specific need in the industry for users looking for an automation-ready system with the versatility to meet a wide range of industrial applications. The high-performance VOXLS 30 C 225, 30 C 320 and 30 C 450 models are now available to order and have maximum source energies of 225kV, 320kV and 450kV respectively for examining parts of various densities and sizes. They also have a more compact footprint than Nikon’s 40 Series while maintaining advanced features traditionally exclusive to larger, more expensive solutions. The systems are designed for automated operations across the production sector, especially for quality control in factories producing lithium-ion batteries or additively manufactured components. The automotive, aerospace, medical and pharmaceutical industries are additional target markets, and many applications will also be found in materials science, natural sciences, and academia. At the core of this series is a metrology-grade, granite-based manipulator coupled with rigid steel towers, which provides a thermally stable and solid construction. High-precision motors, ballscrew drives and encoders ensure precise positioning and accurate movement of all axes, including the synchronous vertical motion of the X-ray sources and detectors. The 30 Series complements Nikon’s flagship VOXLS 40 C 450, a larger capacity model launched in early 2023. Petrochemical’s adaptive measures for lowering river levels

Lowering river levels, rising uncertainty – what can the petrochemical industry do? Andreas Eßmann explores how plants and refineries reliant on waterways for cooling processes can adapt to these new circumstances.

In March 2023, Germany’s cabinet made history. Responding to weeks of high temperatures and low rainfall, it agreed on the country’s first national water strategy, prioritising conservation. This was unsurprising, as water levels for rivers such as the Rhine – a vital commercial artery for the nation – have plummeted in recent years, with cargo ships unable to use it during the 2022’s record-breaking summer heatwaves.

But water scarcity is not an issue confined to the Rhine alone. According to the Germany Environment Agency (UBA), the nation’s ongoing phase-out of coal power and lignite mining could see water levels in Berlin’s main river, the Spree, drop by up to 75% during the summer months. This is, in part, owing to the use of water to fill abandoned coal mines, and groundwater pumped to help extract these fossil fuels no longer being used.

UBA’s President Dirk Messner is already warning of potentially severe scarcity issues across Brandenburg, Berlin and Saxony if existing dams and water reservoirs are not upgraded. However, construction on projects like these can take years, and water shortages across Germany are already acute. This is to say nothing of the intense heat Europe experienced this summer, which further underlines the fact that German industry needs to start putting plans in place to mitigate potential disruption. After all, any further scarcity will impact all levels of society and shift the country’s industrial policy even further, so standing still is not an option.

Petrochemical Problems

Widescale droughts pose particular problems for petrochemical plants, as they are commonly situated on a riverbank or coastal region and use an open-loop system in which water is taken from the adjacent body then used for integral processes such as reactor and alkylation unit cooling, as well as cracking – where heavy hydrocarbon molecules are broken up into lighter molecules – and catalytic reforming, where refinery naphthas are distilled from crude oil into high-octane liquid products.

Water is also used to cool and liquify hydrocarbons, as well as in refluxing – the running of gas vapours from the top of distillation columns through a cooler to condense it for further use in plant systems. Given its versatility and crucial role in a plant’s day-to-day operations, a consistent supply is vital, so the traditional method of harnessing river water and dispersing cooled wastewater has continued unchallenged as the standard in petrochemical refining.

Adapting to the new normal

Yet with the concerning news about Germany’s declining river levels, this strategy may no longer be fit-for-purpose. Put simply, the plant cannot be cooled by water that is no longer there, so more unplanned downtime and disruptive events may ensue. The newly introduced nationwide water conservation strategy must also be accounted for, as it could be a sign of things to come for industries that intensively use water.

Faced with this wider scarcity threat and tightening regulations, facility stakeholders need to be aware of what could become the new normal, and consider how they may need to adapt site processes accordingly. Alternatives to open loop systems, including closed and semi-open circuits, should therefore be explored if the petrochemical industry is to mitigate any potential disruption.

Closed and Semi-Open Loop Systems

What sets the semi-open circuit system design apart from traditional open-loop models is its greater emphasis on water conservation. In a semi-open design, up to 98% of water used on-site is conserved, with the only losses coming from cooling towers economically and efficiently releasing heat through steam. Consequently, issues relating to falling river levels may no longer be as pressing, as consumption can be drastically reduced during potential droughts.

Closed-loop circuits appeal in a similar way, as they are exactly that – closed. They recirculate a fixed volume of water through on-site cooling towers to ensure no loss of resources, using chillers to maintain the fluid’s temperature after it passes through the demanding plant environment. Although this approach allows for even greater conservation, the additional equipment it requires may lead to increased energy consumption.

Considering the power pricing volatility of the past few years, plant stakeholders may be left in a position where opting for more sustainable practices may come with considerable financial downsides. With all industries under pressure to do more with less, specifying energy-efficient solutions is therefore a must for plants adopting either strategies involving closed or semi-open loop systems.

Living in a Modular World

Alongside these twin cost and green pressures, plant stakeholders also need to account for the weather’s inherent unpredictability. Indeed, although there is a consensus among scientists that this summer’s heatwaves will become more likely due to climate change, these wider trends may not be reflected in the day-to-day weather patterns.

Even if the bigger picture points to gradually shallower rivers, this continued unpredictability may make it harder for facility and plant managers to present a business case for permanent equipment. This is understandable – German industry is under more pressure than ever to decarbonise while remaining competitive at home and abroad, and capex budgets can only stretch so far.

Instead, what is required is a dynamic, modular approach to equipment procurement. By adopting hire strategies for key cooling tower, chiller and generator solutions, plants can be more responsive to both legislative and weather-based developments, with the provision of these technologies scaled up and down depending on site need. This is much harder to achieve with a permanent installation, which may quickly become under- or over-specified for site demand as the situation changes, or even non-compliant following updated environmental regulations.

Efficiency Needn’t Hamper Sustainability

To best manage these sometimes-conflicting pressures, it is vital that decision makers review their supply chain and engage outside expertise where appropriate. Integrating sustainable, efficient temporary solutions into ongoing operations and contingency plans is a key first step. However, proactive and pre-emptive planning will be required if this is to be truly effective.

Suppliers capable of providing the latest equipment have a considerable role to play in these efforts and must adapt their portfolios accordingly. Aggreko, for example, introduced its Greener Upgrades initiative in 2021 to help the petrochemical industry make small switches to equipment procurement strategies, resulting in big differences to overall NOx, particulate matter and CO2 emissions, and fuel consumption.

This includes the provision of new technologies such as Stage V generators, battery energy storage solutions (BESS) and the use of alternative fuels such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). Using these solutions to power key conservation technologies, including cooling tower and chiller equipment, can help plant and facility managers reduce energy and water usage while remaining in accordance with environmental legislation.

Finding Assurances in Uncertainty

Throughout all these changes, business continuity must remain paramount. However, established water usage practices are rapidly changing in response to climate uncertainty, placing process up-time at risk. To mitigate business upheaval, plant stakeholders should consider leveraging supplier expertise to manage conflicting demands and the additional skillsets required to operate and maintain new equipment.

As part of this, facility managers should expect services that were once considered extra – for example, on-site installation and remote maintenance – to be included as standard when working with suppliers. For instance, the implementation of new cooling tower, chiller and generator technologies can result in site upheaval if carried out improperly. Similarly, suppliers adopting a fit-and-forget, non-monitoring approach to such vital site equipment can leave petrochemical plants exposed in a challenging business landscape.

This is clearly unacceptable and has driven Aggreko’s efforts to ensure responsive support and monitoring services. Being able to remotely and quickly pick up any breakdowns or outages that may impair refinery performance and provide swift on-site support is a must in the increasingly under-pressure petrochemical industry, where unplanned downtime can be extremely costly. Bearing this in mind, site decision makers should also consider the size and scale of any potential supplier’s depot network before integrating them into their business contingency and continuity plans.

Alleviating Concerns

In conclusion, the pressure to do more with less continues to affect all German industries, especially with climate change creating instability on a national, continental and global level. However, given plunging water levels on the Rhine, Spree and other rivers, and the sector’s traditional reliance on H2O for site processes, German petrochemical plants are more vulnerable than most.

Yet with permanent equipment potentially proving too expensive and unsuitable to manage the changeable weather, new approaches are needed. With costs being so closely monitored, hire options can instead provide petrochemical sites with the dynamism they need to maintain yields and site productivities, even while conserving water. Decision makers should therefore reach out to appropriate suppliers and begin putting steps in place to adapt to what could be a fundamental change in the way plants and refineries operate.

Custom rubber seals

Here are the important considerations when designing a custom seal...In many cases, manufacturers can opt for a standard, off-the-shelf seal. As well as being readily available, these products are certified to ISO 3601 standards and come with relatively low lead times and upfront costs.However, exceptionally demanding or aggressive environments may require a bespoke option built from specialist materials that can withstand increased demands on temperature stability, chemical resistance or other factors.HIGH TEMPERATURE RESISTANCEWhen exposed to environments close to or beyond the recommended operating temperature, rubber seals and O-Rings can degrade and risk becoming non-functional. Excessive heat can lead to both swelling and hardening of the material, resulting in permanent deformation. Meanwhile, extreme cold temperatures can result in elastomer seal becoming harder and more brittle.Many standard materials offer wide temperature ranges. For example, Nitrile rubber (NBR) can operate in environments ranging from -40°C to 108°C, and is resistant to oil, gas and petroleum-based hydraulic fluids. However, AFLAS is more widely used in the oil and gas market because of its ability to withstand temperatures of up to 250°C. Another material with a wide temperature range is Viton (FKM/PPM), a fluoropolymer elastomer and hydrocarbon rubber with a working temperature range of -20°C and 205°C depending on the grade.CHEMICAL RESISTANCEWhen exposed to hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a possibility in oil, gas nd petrochemical facilities, non-resistant elastomers become hard and brittle, losing their elastic properties and ability to seal effectively. Meanwhile, in wastewater treatment plants, H2S and methane can cause rubber to soften, swell, crack and become brittle.Once again, AFLAS is a strong contender for these facilities because of its high resistance to acids, amines, bases and steam. Another option is seals made from perfluoroelastomer (FFKM/FFPM), as this material can resist chemicals including concentrated nitric acid, sodium hydroxide, ethylene diamine and steamOTHER CONSIDERATIONSIn water filtration systems, for instance, seals must be water resistant to avoid degradation due to oxidation. Usually, we’d recommend using EPDM rubber because, as a synthetic rubber comprised of ethylene, propylene and diene, it boasts excellent waterproofing properties. Meanwhile, if the seal will be exposed to external pressure and regularly stretched, a material with good tensile strength is required. Polyurethane materials would offer a better solution than most rubber alternatives for these applications because of their superior tensile strength and ability to withstand abrasion and wear.With certain high-end polymers, demand outstripping supply has meant long lead times. SBT sensors guard against these problems by instantly and accurately detecting flow restrictions, allowing immediate remedial action to be taken.Additionally, when used in conjunction with temperature sensors such as ifm’s TM5101 devices, SBT flow sensors provide an ideal basis for monitoring, managing and optimising the energy usage of conformal temperature control systems.SBT fast-response high precision flow sensors are currently available in four versions. Types SBT633 and SBT634 have G¾ process connections and cover flow rates of 0.3 to 25 l/min and 0.6 to 50 l/min, respectively. Type SBT646 has an RP1 process connection and a flow rate range of 2 to 100 l/min, and type SBT657, which has an RP1½ process connection, covers flow rates from 4 to 200 l/min. All types have an accuracy of ± 5% or better, and all have an IP67 ingress protection rating.

Fanuc to Highlight Robotic and Automation Technologies at Modex 2024

One of two CRX-10iA cobots with an iRVision 3DV/200 vision sensor mounted on its arm scans QR codes on a shelf to confirm that correct products are picked and finds the items to transfer them to a bin on a table. Next a CRX-20iA/L cobot also uses an iRVision 3DV/200 vision sensor to locate a full bin on the order table and place it on a Locus autonomous mobile robot (AMR). The cobot then finds an empty bin on the AMR and places it on the order table. The AMR moves from the order fulfillment area to the shelving side where the CRX-20iA/L picks an empty bin from the table and places it on the AMR and moves the full bin to a table. The CRX-20iA/L uses iRVision to scan QR codes on the bins and to locate the AMR. It also communicates with the AMR to let it know when it has finished swapping empty bins and full orders, and the AMR tells the CRX when it’s in the correct position.Finally, a second CRX-10iA with a fixed iRVision 3DV/600 vision sensor locates and picks products from the full bin, then scans each item according to its RFID tag and places it back on the correct shelf. The CRX-20iA/L can pick consumer items of varying sizes and shapes that weigh up to 20kg. The demonstration highlights its wide motion range and ability to handle small or large bins, relieving workers from physically demanding and repetitive jobs. CRX Cobot Demonstration - Vertical Put Wall Fanuc’s Power Motion i Model A Plus (PMi-AP) will move a tool to random or user-specified locations on a put wall. Attendees can choose which bins to get items from and then the tool pulls the sequence of bins from the put wall and moves them to a conveyor belt for the CRX to access the bin. When a wall bin arrives at the access point, a Fanuc CRX-10iA will pick an item and place it in an order fulfillment bin. An order is fulfilled once an item has been picked from each selected wall bin. Once an order has been fulfilled, the put wall system will bring the bins back to the CRX access point. The CRX then picks items from the order fulfillment bin and places them back into the appropriate put wall bins until each one has been restocked. Heule’s Manual BSF Tooling

The blade can be retracted by manual collar and will swing out with the help of the activation speed. The BSF manual was developed specifically for the many instances where traditional actuation methods were ineffective, including when coolant is not available through the spindle, when through-spindle-air is either unavailable or not programmable, when less than 280 psi pressure is available, or when filtration is poor. It is ideal for counterbores up to 2.3 x through-hole diameter. Standard sizes are available 6.5mm to 20.5mm (0.256” to 0.807”) with specials available to 6mm (0.236”) to 40mm (1.575”). Safer and more reliable than bayonet style tooling, the BSF manual is ideally suited for large boring mills and other open-air machines. They are stocked in the Cincinnati, OH warehouse, and available for same day shipping. This unique tooling works without an anti-rotation device, change of spindle direction, or any machine adaptations, allowing components to be spot faced in the same direction as the bore is drilled.  This saves the time and cost of turning the work piece, while allowing the spot-facing of difficult to reach areas like casting flanges bolt head faces, and more. The tool works both vertically and horizontally, with replaceable carbide-coated blades for extended tool life.  They are ideal for gear housings, yokes, engine casings, compressors, aerospace components and other parts in a wide range of materials. Operation is simple and straightforward. Position the tool above the top material surface, with spindle stopped. Ensure that the activation ring is in the locked position. With blade locked in place, feed the tool through the hole. Only operate the activation ring when the spindle is at a standstill. Next turn the activation ring to the unlocked position. By starting the spindle rotation, the blade folds out into the working position when the activation speed is reached. Position the tool in rapid feed with working speed until approximately 1.0 mm below the back of the workpiece surface (attention to burr height and part configuration). Start machining in working feed. Continue machining to desired counterbore depth. When the Counterbore depth has been reached, feed out of the counterbore far enough to allow blade to fold in without interfering with the part. With spindle stopped, turn the activation ring to the locked position, retracting the blade. Fed the tool out of the workpiece. Existing BSF tools can be modified by exchanging the shank to allow manual activation, as the housings, controls, and blades are identical to the standard BSF range.
