SKF South Africa's engineering knowledge, product portfolio and service capabilities were recently called upon when one of South Africa's coal fired power plants decided to replace an older generation M800 vibration protection system for vibration monitoring on the plant's coal fired steam turbines.

"Technology is constantly changing and the M800 has become obsolete", explains SKF Segments (Pulp and Paper, Energy and HPI) and Key Accounts Manager, Giscard Lailvaux. "In addition, replacement cards for the M800 are unavailable, so it was absolutely the right time to consider a new system and the VM600 vibration protection system, which was the customer's first choice, was introduced to this 2 000 mega watt power plant".

SKF South Africa will be supplying and fitting VM600 vibration protection systems to five additional steam turbines at the power plant and Lailvaux states that SKF technicians will continue to assist with and solve vibration requirements for this valued OEM customer. "SKF is a knowledge engineering company and we combined our skills and expertise, drawn from our five core technologies - bearings and units, seals, power transmissions, mechatronics, lubrication and services - to deliver the right vibration protection solution to this power generation plant", concludes Lailvaux.
