INA FAG HAS EXTENDED ITS X-LIFE SERIES OF CYLINDRICAL ROLLER BEARINGS TO INCLUDE TWO NEW SHEET STEEL AND PROFILE MILLED BRASS CAGE DESIGNS INA FAG INTRODUCES TWO NEW CAGE DESIGNS FOR XLIFE CYLINDRICAL ROLLER BEARINGS The brass cages are now available in both one-piece and two-piece versions. The latter consists of a cage comb and a cage cover riveted to the cage comb at its centre by stud rivets. In the one-piece cage, the pockets containing the rolling elements are machined from a workpiece. Depending on the application, cages with rib guidance or rolling element guidance are recommended and both types have a direct influence on their function. The side walls of the cage are abutted in the rib guided version against the bearing ring ribs and in the rolling element guided version against the rolling elements. Applications involving strong vibrations or high accelerations (for example planet gear bearing arrangements) benefit from the one-piece, rib-guided solid brass cage. This cage, also known as a window cage, encloses the rollers in the bearing. The contact between the longitudinal roller surface and cage and the contact running of the roller against the cage crosspiece, must principally fulfil the following conditions: Due to the internal clearance, only some of the rollers support load, creating a so-called load zone and a load-free zone. Guiding the rollers with parallel axes in the load-free zone and transitional zone to the load zone prevents skewing of the rollers during running of the bearing. Friction between the roller and cage crosspiece should be kept as small as possible, so favourable lubricant distribution must be ensured. Furthermore, effective roller retention must be ensured to prevent rollers falling out of the bearing if the inner ring is removed. The new X-life cage runs at a lower temperature than the existing broached cage. Contact running of the rollers against the crosspiece is still in the straight part of the profile so it is still at a tangent to the circumference of the roller. In this way, it can be ensured that no radial force components occur that would promote friction. Furthermore, the reduced side wall height has a positive effect on lubrication and cage mass and there is a significant reduction in mass-dependent forces, such as those which occur in the case of vibrations or accelerations. The resulting improvement in lubricant flow also improves the temperature behaviour in the bearing. Profile milling of the cage crosspieces has also helped to optimise roller retention, thus giving better control of roller sag. The previous cage design required lock-beading in a single additional operation. However, with profile milling, the retaining strips can even be outside the actual crosspiece surface so there is more space for optimised contact geometry of the roller against the contact surface of the crosspiece. For applications requiring higher temperature, good lubrication and high geometrical stability of the cage, a bearing with a sheet steel cage is often most cost-effective. The X-life sheet steel cage is characterised by precisely defined guidance surfaces on the crosspieces with which the rollers are in contact and therefore have very precise parallelism of the axes. The guidance surface for the roller on the crosspiece is affected by the stamped surface previously used, since this has not only a tool entry and cut surface but also a poorly defined and rough exit surface. The contact running surfaces of the new cage are both flat and uniform. The sheet steel cage will offer the following advantages: The rim type shape of the cage gives considerably better oil and grease flow. With oil lubrication in particular, this can be a decisive feature since oil flowing through the bearing can absorb heat and thus lead directly to lower bearing temperatures. The optimised sheet steel thickness also guarantees higher rigidity than the earlier variant. The special geometry of the snap fit edges gives secure retention of the roller set during fitting without impairing lubricant supply to the functional surfaces. The very precise guidance of rollers with parallel axes, both in the load zone and the load-free zone, prevents skewing of the rolling elements and gives a considerable reduction in transverse forces. Further developments in production technology have resulted in optimum geometry of the crosspieces and thus running of the rollers against the cage crosspiece. This results in precise guidance in the pitch circle. Furthermore, the improved osculation and favourable surface structure have a positive influence on lubricant film formation.
