Powder lubricant free of heavy metals for extrusion processes

Munich, 26 March 2015 – Manufacturers of aerosol cans and tubes or other extruded products are looking for process lubricants free from zinc stearate or other heavy metals, as these are regarded as potentially harmful to health. Lubrication specialist Klüber Lubrication now offers Klüberpress CE 3, which is a new type of powder for cold extrusion applications not containing any zinc stearate.
"Klüberpress CE 3 is the result of a University research project in which Klüber Lubrication participated", explains Stefan Ott, Manager Metalworking Industry at Klüber Lubrication. "Unlike many conventional process lubricants, it does not contain heavy metal additives, which means that associated health risks do not exist with this product." Additionally, Klüberpress CE 3 can contribute to reducing or even eliminating cleaning efforts. "To make cleaning processes of the pressed parts as efficient as possible, we recommend working with the specialist for chemicals in industrial component cleaning, SurTec, as they have experience with cleaning in connection with Klüberpress CE 3", says Ott.
Successful in comparative tests
Klüberpress CE 3 showed clear advantages in the first benchmark tests with comparable powder lubricants. It formed less residues on the pressed parts and tools. Consumption, surface quality of the produced parts, tool wear and forming forces also improved in the test. "In the end, performance depends on the individual process parameters and the geometry of the extruded parts", says Ott. "Our specialits will help you find the right solution for your requirements."
A widely used process
Cold extrusion is a process that is widely used in massive forming. The blanks, also referred to as slugs, are dusted with the powder lubricant in a mixing drum. The powder layer forms the lubricating and separating layer for the forming process in the extrusion die. Optimal application quantities are determined empirically at the customer based on the weight of the blanks, a guide value being 30 to 100 g per 100 kg of blanks, depending on geometry and degree of deformation.
