Nicholas Walecka/Standard-Times special Posted Sep. 27, 2015 at 2:01 AM NEW BEDFORD — When the higher-ups at Shuster Corporation decided it was time to expand the company’s facilities, they explored every option. “We had an opportunity to go to places like Taunton, Fall River and Providence,” said Corporate Controller and IT Manager Justin Bouley. “But a lot of us have been here for many, many years. And New Bedford’s been good to us, and wanted us to stay here. This is our home. "It’s where we want to be.” Shuster — a regional distributor of bearings, power transmission products, industrial safety supplies and more — is owned by Motion Industries, one of the biggest bearing and power transmission companies in North America. Next year will be its 100th in business, all of which were in New Bedford. But the business has outgrown its 25,000 square-foot facility on Wright Street, and after exploring the market, Shuster officials decided to relocate to a 65,000 square-foot location at 55 Samuel Barnet Boulevard in the New Bedford Business Park. “The city stepped up,” said Shuster President Mike Pelehach. “They helped us in finding the building. They acted as our partner along the way. It’s been a good marriage.” Part of the moving process is to transport not only the offices but the entire inventory from Wright Street on the waterfront to the new location in the North End. Officials are currently in that process, which is expected to be complete next week. “We have over 100 53-foot trucks of inventory to get over,” said Pelehach. “We’re taking inventory at the same time, and between getting the counts right and getting things over, it’s been a real challenge. We still have to take care of our customers every day.” Though the transition has been hectic at times, Pelehach and Bouley say the new location will help serve customers and employees more efficiently. The new facility is a one-stop shop for the company’s offices, retail location, and a service area repairing hydraulic hoses. There’s also tons of warehouse space, more than twice the capacity at the new loading area, and there’s even a fitness room for the employees, which falls into part of Motion Industries’ vision for overall employee wellness. “We brought the employees in to show them the new vision – this is the new Shuster Corporation,” Bouley said. “As they’ve come, they’ve seen the transformation. We have a world-class warehouse. They feel part of it, and they’re excited about the move.” And although part of the Shuster’s customer base remains in the area around the waterfront, Pelehach said they don’t foresee losing any business. “We price local customers aggressively,” he said. “Then there’s the depth of our inventory. They just can’t get the stuff that we provide to them from other people in town. And we have as many customers up in this part of town. There are some customers that are right here in the park.”
