At the Motek, igus presented a new lubrication-free drylin linear axis with fast dryspin high helix threads.
Small, light and flat – These are the properties of the low profile linear axis drylin SLN-27, which the motion plastics specialist igus presented at the 2016 Motek. In combination with the dryspin high helix threads, in addition to simple handling tasks, high-speed sensor adjustments can also be implemented cost-effectively with a stepper or DC motor.
With the new high helix thread, the compact low profile linear axis drylin SLN-27 is now suitable for quick handling and positioning – especially in environments where dry operation is required.

The new lubricant-free low profile linear axis, drylin SLN-27, is suitable for feed movements with low weight. The compact unit can be used for sensor adjustments as well as for light handling tasks in instrumentation and laboratory technology. It is based on the low profile linear guide system drylin N with a rail width of 27 millimetres. The materials and the design make drylin N a cost-effective and flexible guide system. The guide rail is made of sturdy, anodised aluminium. With its compact dimensions, 22 millimetres in height and 28 millimetres in width, the linear unit SLN-27 is particularly suitable for confined spaces. Due to the plastic plain bearings in the lead screw mountings and guide carriages, the system is completely free of lubrication and maintenance.
Fast travel with high helix thread
“At the upcoming Motek, we are presenting the low profile linear axis in combination with our new dryspin high helix threads. The drylin SLN-27 is not only small, light and flat, but also fast with 25-millimetre strokes in one revolution,” says Stefan Niermann, head of the drylin linear and drive technology division of igus GmbH. This means that the low profile linear axis can also be used for quick handling and positioning tasks. For dynamic motion and a low-clearance run, the lead screws can also be mounted with ball bearings. The effective clearance of the guide carriage can be adjusted by means of four adjusting screws. The feed is carried out via a lead screw with a diameter of 6.35 millimetres. Five pitch options – 0.8, 2.54, 5.08, 12.7 and 25.4 millimetres – of the high helix thread are available.
With a base weight of only 60 grams, the linear axis is one of the lightweights among the driven linear guide systems. Even with the maximum stroke length of 250 millimetres, the low profile actuator weighs only 160 grams. If the axis is delivered in combination with a NEMA 11 stepper motor, the exterior dimensions still amount to a compact 28 x 28 mm. The portfolio also includes DC motors with or without radial assembly kit. As an option other motors can also be connected quickly and easily via a motor flange. The entire modular system of the drylin SLN-27 low profile axes offers three different carriage options – from the low-priced beginner model and carriages with manual clearance and height adjustment up to the precisely adjustable system with preload function – as well as five different pitches and three motors variants.
