Oakland University launched a new undergraduate engineering program — the Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering — uniquely crafted to meet the surging demand for professionals who can bridge the gap between mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science and controls to design and build intelligent systems. This innovative curriculum (launched in Fall 2024) will place graduates at the forefront of technology, where mechanical precision meets electronic versatility and software intelligence. The new bachelor’s degree is offered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in close collaboration with all other departments within Oakland University’s School of Engineering and Computer Science. “Mechatronics and robotics are transforming many sectors, such as automotive, aerospace, healthcare and manufacturing,” said Professor Osamah Rawashdeh, chair the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. “Mechatronics integrates mechanics, electronics, software and control systems, creating solutions that are reliable, adaptable and cost-effective. Robotics, on the other hand, focuses on designing intelligent systems that interact with and adapt to their Environments. Together, they create the foundation for a rapidly advancing technological landscape.” The Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering degree prepares students to enter an ever-evolving workforce offering an exciting pathway into dynamic engineering careers. The required courses cover key engineering principles, including computer-aided design, programming, electrical systems, thermodynamics and industrial systems, providing broad, essential skills across engineering disciplines. Specialized subjects deepen this foundation with a focus on electric circuits, signal processing and robotics programming. Program concentrations span six fields: Automotive Mechatronic Systems, Autonomous Vehicles, Electric Drives, Human-Robot Interaction, Industrial Robotic and Intelligent Controls. Each concentration hones specific skills, preparing students for an array of roles across multiple industries. “As robotics engineers, for example, program graduates will design and deploy sophisticated robotic systems in healthcare, manufacturing and beyond,” Rawashdeh said. “As automation specialists, they will be able to drive efficiency and innovation in production by optimizing automated processes. In roles as mechatronics engineers or control systems engineers, they will integrate mechanical, electrical and computing systems to create innovative, reliable solutions in fields like aerospace, mobility and renewable energy. As technology continues to evolve, opportunities will expand for human-machine interaction and embodied AI professionals, driving change and meeting industry demands in these transformative fields.”
