2025 August China Energy Production Overview
In August, the decline in raw coal production at industrial enterprises above the designated size narrowed, the growth rate of crude oil production accelerated, and the production of natural gas and electricity maintained steady growth.
I. Production of Raw Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas and Related Information
The decline in raw coal production narrowed. In August, industrial enterprises above the designated size produced 390 million tons of raw coal, a year-on-year decrease of 3.2 percent, with the decline narrowing by 0.6 percentage points from July. The average daily output was 12.60 million tons.
From January to August, industrial enterprises above the designated size produced 3.17 billion tons of raw coal, a year-on-year increase of 2.8 percent.

The growth rate of crude oil production accelerated. In August, industrial enterprises above the designated size produced 18.26 million tons of crude oil, a year-on-year increase of 2.4 percent, with the growth rate accelerating by 1.2 percentage points from July. The average daily output was 589,000 tons.
From January to August, industrial enterprises above the designated size produced 144.86 million tons of crude oil, a year-on-year increase of 1.4 percent.
Crude oil processing maintained rapid growth. In August, industrial enterprises above the designated size processed 63.46 million tons of crude oil, a year-on-year increase of 7.6 percent. The average daily processing volume was 2.047 million tons.
From January to August, industrial enterprises above the designated size processed 488.07 million tons of crude oil, a year-on-year increase of 3.2 percent.


Natural gas production maintained steady growth. In August, industrial enterprises above the designated size produced 21.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas, a year-on-year increase of 5.9 percent. The average daily output was 690 million cubic meters.
From January to August, industrial enterprises above the designated size produced 173.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas, a year-on-year increase of 6.1 percent.

II. Electricity Production
Electricity production by industries above the designated size maintained steady growth. In August, these enterprises generated 936.3 billion kWh of electricity, a year-on-year increase of 1.6%. The average daily electricity output exceeded 300 billion kWh for the first time, reaching 302.0 billion kWh. From January to August, electricity production totaled 6,419.3 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 1.5%. After adjusting for calendar days, the average daily electricity output increased by 1.9% year-on-year.
By energy source:
Wind power accelerated its growth,
Hydropower experienced an expanded decline,
Thermal power, nuclear power, and solar power saw moderated growth.
Specifically:
Thermal power increased by 1.7% year-on-year, with growth slowing by 2.6 percentage points compared to July.
Hydropower decreased by 10.1% year-on-year, with the decline widening by 0.3 percentage points.
Nuclear power grew by 5.9% year-on-year, with growth slowing by 2.4 percentage points.
Wind power surged by 20.2% year-on-year, with growth accelerating by 14.7 percentage points.
Solar power rose by 15.9% year-on-year, with growth slowing by 12.8 percentage points.
