Held every two years, the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show (CMTS) returned to the Toronto Congress Centre from September 29 to October 2. This year’s event marked a significant step in the manufacturing industry’s fight against tariffs, as more than 750 exhibitors and over 10,000 industry executives and key stakeholders came together to showcase the latest in machine tooling, additive manufacturing, smart manufacturing solutions and more. Over the course of four days, attendees could sit in on a variety of keynote sessions and panel discussions led by industry leaders and experts. These sessions offered a deep dive into the most pressing topics for today’s manufacturers, with AI emerging as a central theme in many of the conversations. On the trade show floor, software took centre stage for several exhibitors, including FANUC, which showcased its ROBOGUIDE Robot Simulation Software, released in June of this year. The platform aims to streamline automation design and implementation through the 3D simulation of robotics work cells, eliminating the need for physical prototypes and saving time and money for manufacturers looking to introduce robotics to their operations.

Some other notable new products featured include the Canadian debut of SCHUNK’s Robot PLUS Portfolio—which features a modular lineup of tool changers, compensation units and force and torque sensors—as well as Mitutoyo’s QM-Fit, an automated vision system which aims to eliminate the requirement for specialized training to quickly and effectively analyze parts.

Central to the show floor was the Innovation Park, a space dedicated to exploring real-world solutions for today’s production challenges. Features included the RAPID + TCT Showcase, highlighting developments in additive manufacturing and 3D printing; the Smart Manufacturing Experience, which demonstrated the practical applications of AI, automation, digital twins and IIoT; and the Discovery Zone, which offered a curated selection of cutting-edge technologies from around the world. On the far side of the convention floor, the Innovation Zone, presented by Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen), showcased companies driving digital transformation and advancing new technologies. Notable exhibitors in this cluster included Metafold 3D, which uses AI to transform 3D renderings into actionable business data, and AutoAlign AI, specializing in AI-powered workflows to improve quality and efficiency in manufacturing operations.
