NSK Submits Commitment Letter to Initiate SBTi Target Validation Process

NSK Ltd. (NSK; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President and CEO: Akitoshi Ichii) has submitted a Commitment Letter to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi),*1 an international organization addressing climate change. NSK aims to obtain target validation from the SBTi, to confirm that its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets—including those for CO₂—are aligned with Science-Based Targets*2

NSK positions the achievement of carbon neutrality as a key management priority and aims to effectively achieve net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO₂ emissions by fiscal 2035, while also working to reduce emissions across the entire product life cycle, including Scope 3 emissions. To this end, NSK leverages its core technologies, including tribology, to pursue energy-saving activities and technological innovation that improve the efficiency of fuel and electricity use in its manufacturing processes, while also reducing CO₂ emissions by employing renewable energy. In addition, NSK provides customers with environmentally friendly products that contribute to sustainability by delivering compactness, weight reduction, and lower friction.   In addition, this summer NSK became the first in the industry to publish a carbon footprint of products (CFP) assessment report for bearings and ball screws, clearly disclosing the calculation conditions for CO₂ emissions across the entire product life cycle. Through such initiatives, the company has enhanced the transparency and credibility of its CO₂ reduction efforts. Building on these activities, NSK has now submitted a Commitment Letter to SBTi, stating its intent to pursue SBT verification.   Going forward, NSK will continue to base its actions on its carbon neutrality policy, striving to obtain SBT validation within two years while ensuring its GHG reduction plans are in line with the SBTi approach. By focusing on creating social value via its response to environmental challenges, NSK seeks to grow its business while helping to build a carbon-neutral world.
