Current Situation in World Special Steel Market

In the recently held 2005 China Special Steel Enterprise Association Developing and Investment Summit, Mr. Hu mingyang, general secretary of China Special Steel Enterprise Association(CSSEA), had made a general introduction of the current situation in world special steel market, also made a determination to improve our own special steel industry.
Statistically, in recent years output of special steel in mills all over the world have taken up 9 to 10 percent of the total steel output. The ratio may be even higher in some industrial developed nations like Sweden, Germany, Japan, Italy and South Korea whose special steel/total ratio have hit 50%, 22.54%, 18.81%, 17.42%, 13.02% respectively. However, that ratio is only 11.15% in China.
We can see that transaction on special steel become hot in these years, especially in the industrial developed region such as EU, North America, East Asia etc. At present, total export of special steel in the world has exceeded 20 million tons. Among the world mills, Japan, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, UK, Italy, Spain and South Korea take the overwhelming share, about 90%, in the special steel market. Japan and Germany are the leader, whose share have reached 30% and 20% respectively.
Nowaday, industrial structure adjustment and technology upgrading have become the major trend in world special steel industry. The representative example of this trend are Sweden, Japan and Spain.
In Sweden, mills have been regrouped according to their production coverage, and now special steel made in Sweden, like bearing steel, high speed steel etc. have become world famous.
Japan and Spain also carried out similar industrial reformation, regrouping the former hundreds of mills into several competitive steel powers, being in charge of productions of specific steel. So that they could specialize in the production technology and new product development.
As a growing nation in special steel industry, we China should keep pace with time and carry out some effective policies to improve our competitive ability in the world steel market.
