OPG signs agreement to support SMR deployment in Poland

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE) have signed a letter of intent (LOI) that could see the Canadian utility provide pre-deployment, operations, maintenance and other services to OSGE as Poland moves forward with plans to deploy small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs).

The LOI builds on a previous agreement announced by the two companies in June 2023. It was signed in Warsaw by representatives from both organizations and witnessed by officials from Poland’s Ministry of Industry and Strategic Energy Infrastructure.

Poland is planning to build up to 24 GE Hitachi BWRX-300 reactors—the same model currently under construction at OPG’s Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) site east of Toronto—across six locations in the country.

According to OPG, this agreement marks a key milestone in the development and operation of BWRX-300 SMRs in Poland and could strengthen Ontario’s nuclear supply chain by demonstrating the value of early leadership in SMR deployment.

In addition to operations and maintenance support, OPG may provide pre-operations services such as site-specific assessments, project management, licensing strategy and advisory services.

Key Facts:

OPG has begun construction on the G7’s first commercial grid-scale SMR at its DNNP site. The first of four planned BWRX-300 reactors is expected to be completed by 2030 and will generate enough electricity to power approximately 300,000 homes.
More than 80 Ontario companies have signed agreements with OPG to support the SMR project, contributing to a growing domestic and international nuclear supply chain.
In 2022, Synthos Green Energy and ORLEN formed the joint venture OSGE to deploy a fleet of BWRX-300 SMRs in Poland.
In 2024, OPG subsidiary Laurentis Energy Partners signed a $40 million contract with OSGE to complete a Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) on SMRs.
OPG and OSGE are part of a technical collaboration group that includes GE Hitachi and the Tennessee Valley Authority, focused on developing the BWRX-300 standard design and key reactor components.
