Capstone Copper reports temporary production disruption at Chilean mine

Vancouver-based Capstone Copper Corp. has reported a temporary disruption in sulphide copper production at its Mantoverde operation in Chile due to motor failures affecting the site’s ball mill equipment.
According to the company, the first of two ball mill electrical drive motors failed on August 24. A spare motor was installed in the following days to restore operations. However, on August 30, the second motor also failed, and with no additional spare available on site, production has been impacted.
In a press statement on Aug. 31, Capstone reported that repairs will take approximately four weeks. During this time, the site will operate at roughly 50 per cent capacity by bypassing the ball mill, a contingency mode the company says it has used successfully in the past. The company is also rescheduling planned maintenance originally set for later in September to coincide with the downtime.
The production impact is expected to be between 3,000 and 4,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate. Capstone stated that it is investigating the root cause of the motor failures and is developing a replacement and repair strategy to return the operation to full capacity.
