Latest findings, from a key survey conducted on behalf of Brammer, Europe’s leading supplier of maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) products, suggest that manufacturing companies across Europe are failing to capitalise on more than Euro13 billion of potential energy savings at their plants.
The 2008 Brammer Energy Survey found that, although manufacturers are acutely aware of the importance of making energy savings, and many are developing and implementing plans to this effect, few are exploiting, or even aware of, the full potential savings that they could make.
Data from the survey indicated that the considerable potential energy savings from mechanical power transmission products (MPT) such as motors, bearings and belts used throughout manufacturing plants across Europe are being overlooked despite representing a considerable possible saving in both financial and environmental terms.
In their survey of over 330 manufacturing companies across 10 countries in Europe, Brammer found that while over three quarters of respondents think that energy saving is an important issue for their plant and company, only 6% believe they have already made all the savings possible. Most (60%) are in the process of planning or implementing energy savings, but crucially very few are including MPT purchases in these plans, where the most substantial savings are to be made.
In fact Brammer’s research results suggest that 78% of key managers focus on energy savings in relation to their production process but 59% are not likely to even be considering changes to their use of motors. Yet according to the UK's Carbon Trust, 65% of a typical plant’s energy consumption is taken up by motors alone.
Brammer’s calculations estimate that fitting more efficient motors and drives could deliver energy savings of up to 15% each time which would save
