50 Jobs Cut at SKF Aeroengine Bearings Unit

AROUND 50 jobs are to be cut at SKF Aeroengine Bearings Unit in Stonehouse, the SNJ can reveal. The redundancies were confirmed during a series of meetings with staff on Friday, July 10. All remaining staff will continue to work a four-day week until the company’s annual one-week shut down in August, when the situation will be reviewed. The job losses come almost a month after the Swedish-owned firm announced it was shutting its Super Precision Bearings manufacturing unit at the same site in Oldends Lane, with the loss of 82 workers. SKF’s UK marketing manager Phil Burge, said: "The redundancies are due to the number of our customers reducing their order books. "We cannot see an upturn in production at this present time, so unfortunately we have had to make this difficult decision." He added that the job cuts would affect all roles at the factory, which manufactures high-precision bearings for the aerospace and motor sport industries. A statement on the company’s website said the redundancies are part of a series of measures designed to "reduce its manufacturing output in light of the weakening demand affecting nearly all segments." Recently SFK shut one of its small bearings factories in France, with the loss of almost 400 posts.
