India Auto Parts Group Fights Counterfeits

An Indian auto components association said Jan. 5 it has been conducting raids of suspected counterfeiters along with law-enforcement officials amid a growing epidemic of counterfeit auto parts production in India. The Auto Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) of India has created a consumer affairs committee that is trying to increase consumer awareness about counterfeit products and conducting raids to help curb the duplicate market. Component suppliers such as Bosch, Lucas, Delphi, NRB Bearings, Elofic, AIS (Asahi India Glass Ltd.) have joined together to conduct common raids under the umbrella of ACMA. Over the past six months 34 raids have been conducted in Northern India. An ACMA commissioned study shows counterfeits account for close to 35% of the replacement parts market in India. India's government is losing revenue in the form of excise, duties, VAT and other local taxes, according to ACMA. The association made the announcement during the Auto Expo 2010 show, which it cosponsors.
