Certification from European Aviation Safety Agency FAG Aerospace was audited by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) at the end of 2009 and certified as an aviation development company across Europe. FAG Aerospace is the sole rolling bearing manufacturer worldwide with this certification. “We are now authorized to declare the so-called airworthiness of our own rolling bearings, which means that they can be used in aviation applications”, said Edgar Streit, Head of FAG Aerospace Development. Certification now valid across Europe FAG Aerospace received this certification at a national level from the Federal Agency of Aviation in 2002. After the national standards for aviation safety were replaced by Europe-wide uniform standards, the responsibility for this audit was transferred to the EASA. It is now in charge of certifying companies all over Europe. Therefore, the certification had to be renewed to cover the extended scope. Meeting the highest quality standards in the development, manufacturing and reconditioning of aircraft bearings is crucial for the certification. All processes are consistently recorded and documented. In aerospace engineering, the Schaeffler Group with its FAG and Barden brands is the world’s leading manufacturer of super-precision bearings for aircraft and helicopter engines, as well as for aerospace applications. Nearly all modern passenger aircraft use this bearing technology. The product portfolio ranges from main shaft and gearbox bearing supports in aircraft engines and gearbox and rotor pylon bearing supports in helicopters to turbopump bearings in rocket engines as well as special bearing supports for satellites and spacecraft. Applications of these highly reliable, state-of-the-art special bearings can also be found, for example, in nuclear and medical technology. Highest demands on quality and safety Rolling bearing supports in engines of aircraft and rockets are subjected to extreme loads. High thrust loads at extreme temperatures push components to the limits of their performance. At the same time, they must meet extremely high safety requirements. For Schaeffler Group Aerospace, this means the highest level of quality and reliability along with a highly dynamic innovative force. Research and development are therefore pushed forward to a high degree. Materials development, for example, develops special steels that withstand extreme loads and speeds in combination with ceramic rolling elements.
