Sales of Power Transmission Products Rise Slightly

U.S. and Canadian manufacturers' sales of power transmission products rose in January, with U.S. manufacturers reporting a slight increase of 0.1% and Canadian manufacturers' sales climbing by 10.4%, according to new data from the Power Transmission Distributors Association in Chicago Comparing data for U.S. manufacturers between January 2010 and January 2009 still show declines with year-to-date sales down 12.85. However, Canadian manufacturers' year-to-year sales are up 2.9%. Sales of variable speed drives, positioning systems/linear motion products and mechanical drive systems by U.S. manufacturers did particularly well in January, increasing 38.9%, 21.9%, and 16.8%, respectively. Showing sales declines are unmounted bearings (8.1%) and clutches and brakes (7.8%). Mounted bearings, clutches and brakes and positioning systems/linear motion products all show sales gains for Canadian manufacturers, at 28.2%, 25.1% and 20.4%, respectively. Sales of variable speed drives fell 12%. U.S. manufacturers confidence rose from 4.9 in December to 5.0, the highest position in a year. Canadian manufacturers confidence rose slightly from 4.6 from 4.5 in December 2009.
