The Prince of Wales met with Schaeffler staff at their exhibition stand at the Start Wales Festival (7-8 September 2010) held at the National Botanical Garden in Camarthen, West Wales. His Royal Highness spoke to Richard Granger, Sales Engineer at Schaeffler (UK) Ltd, to learn more about Schaeffler’s range of rolling and plain bearings that are helping engineers to design more energy efficient wind, wave and tidal turbines. Start (www.startuk.org) is a UK nationwide initiative by The Prince’s Charities Foundation to promote and celebrate sustainable living. HRH cut the ribbon at the very first Start Wales Festival. The event featured presentations and exhibits on the simple steps we can all take to make better use of our natural resources, including energy, food, transport, buildings and waste – at home and in the workplace. More than 160 exhibitors attended the event, including Schaeffler (UK) Ltd. A variety of different rolling bearings and plain bearings were displayed on Schaeffler’s stand, many of these designed to support specific types of renewable energy systems, including wind, wave and tidal turbines. Also on display was Schaeffler’s new ELGOTEX® range of INA plain bushes. This range of low friction, maintenance-free plain bushes is ideally suited to dry-running applications, including high load, high vibration environments. ELGOTEX® offers a variety of technical advantages that stem from its unique, entwined double-layer design. These bushes are already being utilised on wind turbines and solar energy plants around the world. Richard Granger commented: “It was a pleasure to meet and talk with His Royal Highness on such an important day for the Welsh community and industry. The Prince took a great interest in Schaeffler’s products, particularly our bearing ranges for specific types of renewable energy systems such as wind turbines, wave power and tidal energy systems.” “The Prince also showed a keen interest in Schaeffler’s automotive engine components plant based in Llanelli, South Wales, which manufactures a range of bearings and engine components for the automotive sector,” he added. Over the last few years, Schaeffler’s Automotive Division has developed a range of innovative bearing solutions that are helping vehicle manufacturers produce more compact, lighter vehicles, with improved fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. This includes components for the latest all-electric and hybrid electric vehicles.
