How and When to Use Lubrication for Simplicity Plain Bearings

(May 13, 2011 - Rockford, IL) What type of lubrication should I use with Simplicity linear bearings? A proper lubricant can potentially reduce friction by up to 50%, help to minimize wear of the bearing liner, reduce heat buildup within the bearing, and possibly increase speeds slightly. If external lubrication is used with Simplicity linear bearings, be sure to use one of these recommended by PBC. These include waylube oil such as Mobil Vactra #2, any standard 3-in-1 type oil, most general purpose lightweight oils, and low viscosity petroleum based grease. DO NOT USE WD-40® or similar spray type lubricants. The propellants from the spray will leave behind a gummy residue that will cause long-term stick-slip issues and increased friction for the bearing. DO NOT USE PTFE sprays, fluorocarbons, or any silicone based products. DO NOT USE moly or other type of filled greases. DO NOT USE any type of motor oil with additives. These types of oils may work short term, but in the long run will increase friction and stick-slip. If grease is to be used, it should be applied as a light film in order to work properly. The temptation will be to pump the bearing full of grease similar to a ball bearing, but the result will be increased friction, stick-slip, and binding.
