Longer automotive suspension life with new MacPherson bearing unit from SKF

SKF has launched a new MacPherson suspension bearing unit for use in a wide range of automotive applications. The new design of bearing unit offers even greater operating life, helping to improve the reliability of suspension systems. The new bearing unit features an innovative seal design, which combines excellent protection against external pollution with low friction torque, with 50% less water content when tested against a standard seal, and 20% less frictional torque. In addition, a new ball set increases radial load capacity by 20%, while reducing radial clearance by 40%. A metallic spring seat is also incorporated. This is over-moulded inside a lower polymer housing and increases resistance to deformation by up to 50%, and stress levels by around 8% on composite components. "To meet the increased performance demands, in terms of higher reliability and increased operating life, SKF has redeveloped its MacPherson suspension bearing unit, using design for Six Sigma, to withstand higher levels of severe driving conditions," says Andrea Griseri, Business & Product Development Manager for Steering and Suspension, SKF Automotive Division. Griseri continues, "Today, car manufacturers build on platforms that are intended for global markets. This means that the same models must cope with an even wider range of external forces in different driving conditions, especially severe conditions. The MacPherson suspension bearing unit meets these market requirements, being able to support high loads, withstand severe pollution and improve long term reliability". With a global footprint of production sites and application/technical centres located in Europe, Asia, and Americas, SKF has the capabilities and is structured to fulfil worldwide automotive market requirements.
