Employee's at Timken's Tyger River manufacturing plant in Union were notified Thursday that a change in production will result in a loss of 183 jobs by the end of 2013. In a statement released by Timken, the company announced that 60 temporary jobs will be eliminated by the end of 2012, while 123 full-time jobs - including 12 salaried positions - will be phased out by the end of 2013. The move comes as the company announced that it has decided to focus the Tyger River's manufacturing footprint primarily on thrust and large bore-bearings. In the release, the company states, "the production of smaller bearings accounts for approximately one-third of the plant's current output, and the movement of these product lines from Tyger River will result in comparable reductions in staffing at the plant." Timken said that the change in philosophy is to make the Tyger River facility competitive for years to come. The design is to "focus production on a narrower, but key product line," since thrust and large-bore bearings are utilized in markets including metals, mining, oil and gas and wind energy. Timken, which has invested $33 million in the product lines that remain, stated that the company is evaluating future investments to improve its position in the marketplace. The company states that the production capacity leaving the plant will be moved to other company facilities located in North Carolina and South Carolina with some limited production moving to other global manufacturing facilities based on the customers they serve.
