JAPAN 3D DEVICES Co., Ltd. to Start Mass-Production of Components for HUDs

Minebea Co., Ltd. ("Minebea", Head Office: Miyota-machi, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano, Representative Director, President and CEO: Yoshihisa Kainuma) and its subsidiary as well as the affiliated company accounted for by the equity method of Okamoto Glass Co., Ltd. ("Okamoto Glass", Head office: Kashiwa-shi, Chiba, President and CEO: Tsuyoshi Okamoto), namely JAPAN 3D DEVICES Co., Ltd. ("J3DD", Head Office: Kashiwazaki-shi, Niigata, President: Tomoyuki Saito), will commence the first mass-production of glass components for use in head-up displays ("HUDs") at the Kashiwazaki Plant.
In July 2014, Minebea subscribed in the third party allotment for the new shares of J3DD, which was a subsidiary of Okamoto Glass. J3DD is a manufacturer of high precision 3D molded thin lenses, including concave mirrors (reflectors) for use in HUDs for automobiles and has been making preparations for the establishment of mass-production system for HUD components.
The new products to be mass-produced are the ones Okamoto Glass have received orders from an automotive components manufacturer, and the products are to be sold to such automotive parts company by Okamoto Glass, which carries out the polishing process of molded glasses manufactured by J3DD.
Through the use of HUDs, a car driven can reduce the eyes movement to a dashboard at the time of the high-speed running on the highways. As such, the applications of HUDs have started with high-quality automobiles in Europe and been expanded into various types of cars produced by automotive manufacturers all over the world. Glass lenses used for HUDs have superior light stability and are capable of responding to the high qualities required for the products. Lenses being introduced in the market are planned to be deployed in luxury models in Europe where the safety of high speed running is strongly required.
Commencement of mass production: scheduled for September 2015 (as planned)
There will be no revision to the consolidated business forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2016.
