Reelcraft creating 40 jobs

A Swedish manufacturer expects to create up to 40 jobs in the next two years as it invests in new equipment to expand its Whitley County operation. Reelcraft Industries Inc. makes specialized hose, cord and cable reels used on firetrucks and in factories. The company, which makes 2,500 reel models, sells its products worldwide, including to the military. The new jobs, including machining and assembly positions, will pay $17.34 an hour on average, said Jon Myers, president of the Whitley County Economic Development Corp. Columbia City-based Reelcraft is a subsidiary of SKF Group, which is headquartered in Sweden. It now employs about 200 full-time workers in Whitley County. Myers compared the company’s culture to “a big-sized family business.” Reelcraft plans to invest about $420,000 in new equipment, which will increase production capacity. The Indiana Economic Development Corp. has offered the company up to $175,000 in conditional tax credits, based on its job creation plans. The IEDC has also offered up to $50,000 in training grants. The Whitley County Redevelopment Commission is matching that training grant with an additional $50,000. Reelcraft chose the training grant in lieu of applying for a multiyear tax abatement. Eric Huston, Reelcraft’s general manager, said in a statement that the grants will “be used to further develop our local workforce through training investments.”
