Quarrying and Mining Company Saves Money by Switching to NSK's Molded Oil Bearings

(August 9, 2011) NSK’s Asset Improvement Programme (AIP) has helped a large quarrying and mining company to achieve annual cost savings of #8364;14,389 (£12,530) per year by solving a bearing reliability problem that was occurring on an overhead quarrying conveyor. The conveyor’s bearing inserts were failing every two months as a result of exposure to ingress from water and abrasive particles. The high annual cost of replacing the bearings alongside the lengthy downtime resulting from the failures led the company to launch an initiative to source better-performing solutions. As part of this initiative, NSK’s engineers visited the quarry and inspected the overhead conveyor; they said that Molded Oil bearings would prolong bearing life.

Key benefits of product application: Molded Oil bearings employ a solid lubricant to improve the performance of machinery in environments such as this that are exposed to high humidity, corrosion and contamination. They are claimed to offer more than twice the operating life of grease lubrication in water-contaminated environments. There is no need to refill the lubricant as Molded Oil bearings provide a continuous supply of lubricating oil. The bearings have already exceeded the life of the previous bearing inserts by a factor of nine, delivering 19 months of trouble-free operation, according to the customer.
